Fake IFA Camera Fools Internet While Sonida Denies Making It

An anonymous prototype at IFA sparked rumors of a budget Micro Four Thirds camera from Sonida, but the company denies any connection. The device turned out to be a cheap mockup with an incompatible lens mount that leaves buyers with nothing to actually purchase.

The IFA Ghost That Never Was

Trade shows are notorious breeding grounds for confusion, but the chaos surrounding a certain camera at IFA in Germany takes the crown. A device surfaced on the show floor sporting an interchangeable lens mount and a look that sent rumor mills spinning. As 43 Rumors reported, the NBD-branded camera was widely showcased as the new Songdian MFT camera.

The assumption felt natural enough since both Songdian and NBD sell budget-level digital cameras and Songdian is actively working on a Micro Four Thirds system.

Sonida states that it has nothing to do with the NBD camera seen at IFA. Shenzhen Sonida Digital Technology quickly poured cold water on the excitement. According to the company, it officially joined the Micro Four Thirds system earlier this year and announced it was making a matching camera and lens, but this particular device is entirely unrelated.

The mix-up stems from a tangled corporate family tree where Songdian operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sonida established in 2023 to make digital cameras, whereas NBD is owned and operated by Niubi Digital International, founded in 2015 compared to Sonida's 2006 origins.

Under the Hood of a Mockup

When the Micro Four Thirds organization investigated the hardware following inquiries, the official word confirmed that the camera shown at IFA was not a Sonida product and that Sonida did not provide any information about its impending camera at the event. Looking closer at the physical design reveals why the hardware does not add up. While the image sensor sure looks like a Micro Four Thirds sensor, the lens mount is not—the screw locations, locking mechanism, and number of electrical contacts differ slightly.

The NBD camera is a general product mockup rather than a production-level camera.

Stripping away the speculation leaves a device that looks derivative of a Sony a7C-series camera design, albeit without an electronic viewfinder, and it just generally looks cheap for lack of a better term. Whether it eventually adopts a true Micro Four Thirds mount remains to be seen, but right now it serves as an expensive reminder that surface-level similarities do not make a system compatible.

What This Means for Your Gear Bag

For anyone waiting to see how Chinese imaging newcomers shake up traditional optical ecosystems, this episode proves that not every prototype on a showroom floor deserves your attention. Shenzhen Sonida made it clear through its own communication channels that whatever it is cooking remains strictly in development.

The only certainty for now is that Sonida is not claiming any involvement or relationship to the NBD camera shown at IFA, leaving buyers with nothing to put in their gear bags just yet.
