The device is not just a modest refresh of the original concept. It overhauls the folding geometry because the previous model left a portion of delicate glass exposed to the wild when closed.
In the original Mate XT, Huawei went with a Z-shaped fold where one portion of the screen remained permanently outside, waiting for keys or pocket grit to ruin it. As Vikhyaat Vivek reported for Digital Trends, the Mate XT 2 fixes that design flaw by adopting an inward-folding philosophy: its roughly 10-inch flexible display now folds inward from both sides.

That shift means a separate exterior screen handles routine texting, while the fragile interior stays tucked away until you intentionally unfold it into a tablet. Promotional footage shows the hardware surviving repeated drops and pressurized water jets, though Huawei has yet to disclose an official IP rating. The hardware looks undeniably striking in Jin Purple, Dark Black, and Pure White, with the black and white variants framed in gold accents.
Excess Storage for an Exorbitant Price
When you unfold a phone into a 10-inch workspace, the illusion is that you can ditch a laptop or a tablet. Huawei leans hard into this pitch by packing the Mate XT 2 with 16GB of RAM across every configuration, alongside 512GB, 1TB, or a massive 2TB of built-in storage. There is also a 1TB edition equipped with Huawei's privacy-screen technology, while the top-tier purple 2TB version bundles that same privacy display with a stylus. Standard configurations are expected to ship in China by October 31.
Yet cramming 2TB of storage into a tri-folding pocket device creates a wildly expensive contradiction. Huawei has not announced final pricing for the Mate XT 2, but nobody expects a bargain here. Piling desktop-grade storage into a dual-hinge chassis serves primarily to push an already astronomical invoice even higher for status-driven early adopters.
What gets pitched is a full-sized 10-inch tablet that effortlessly slips into your pocket and replaces your entire gear bag. What you actually get is a thick, ultra-heavy brick that demands deliberate two-handed unfolding just to check an email, costing a small fortune for the privilege of keeping its fragile screen hidden.
