DJI Builds Robot Vacuums With Legs to Step Over High Sills

DJI is launching the Romo A2 and P2 robot vacuums in Europe starting at €1,200, featuring retractable motorized legs that climb over obstacles up to 8.5 cm tall. The lineup packs 36,000 Pa suction and promises up to a full year of maintenance-free dock operation.

A hallway threshold or a clothes drying rack is no longer an excuse to rescue a stranded vacuum. Drone maker DJI has launched the Romo A2 and Romo P2 across European markets, fitting retractable motorized "legs" into their undercarriages. This mechanical setup allows the devices to step over obstacles up to 8.5 cm high—areas standard puck-shaped vacuums cannot even approach.

Engineers increased suction power from 25,000 to a massive 36,000 Pa, using drone-grade LiDAR for spatial mapping and navigation. According to DJI developers, the self-emptying base station can operate for up to 365 days without replacing consumables, up from 200 days in the previous generation. In quiet mopping mode, noise tops out at a modest 38 dB, while the battery recharges completely in 2.5 hours. Differences between the models are purely aesthetic: the Romo A2 comes in solid matte white, while the Romo P2 features tinted translucent accents.

Data privacy also received substantial attention. Users can hard-disable the camera and microphone directly in the companion app and wipe navigation logs. By late 2026, DJI promises a dedicated local-only mode that cuts all internet access to ensure interior footage never reaches company servers.

In Europe, the base Romo A2 costs €1,200, while the P2 sells for €1,300, with shipments starting in September. It represents uncompromising engineering overkill tailored for homes with awkward split levels and high door sills. Leaving the base station untouched for a year sounds compelling, but exposed mechanical leg joints spinning amid dust and tangled hair will almost certainly demand more routine maintenance than marketing claims suggest.
