GPD Win Max 3 cramming desktop Ryzen power into a $1,750 handheld

GPD revealed pricing for its Win Max 3 hybrid ahead of a September 2 crowdfunding debut, asking between $1,750 and $3,499. The device packs heavy AMD silicon and a 97 Wh removable battery into a 9-inch clamshell, but awkward trackpad placement and soldered RAM make it a tough sell over buying a separate laptop and handheld.

GPD wants you to pay at least $1,750 for a machine that tries to be both your work laptop and your gaming handheld, leaving you squinting at a tiny 9.06-inch screen either way. Ahead of its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign launching on September 2, the company revealed pricing for the Win Max 3, stretching from that hefty entry fee up to an eye-watering $3,499. That base configuration packs an 8-core AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 388 processor with Radeon 8060S graphics, 32GB of soldered RAM, and a 1TB SSD—promising true desktop-class gaming inside a chassis that fits in a backpack.

To cram this much horsepower into a miniature clamshell, GPD made ergonomic compromises you will feel immediately. While you get a physical keyboard meant for touch typing, the trackpad sits awkwardly above the keybed, wedged directly between integrated game controllers. The hardware sheet flaunts a 40 Gbps USB4 port for external GPU docks, a swappable mini SSD slot, and a front-mounted 97 Wh removable battery with extra packs priced at $69. Yet the soldered LPDDR5x-8000 memory means whatever memory tier you buy on day one is what you are stuck with for life.

Spending $1,750 or more on an all-in-one hybrid makes little financial sense when that same budget buys a dedicated portable console alongside a full-sized, comfortable work laptop. Squeezing spreadsheets onto a nine-inch display just to avoid packing two separate gadgets is a painful trade-off only the most devoted niche tinkerers will actually enjoy.
