pple has overhauled its desktop powerhouse, dropping M5 Max and M5 Ultra silicon into the Mac Studio sixteen months after its previous refresh. The marketing deck leans heavily into artificial intelligence, claiming up to 4.3 times faster AI throughput, double the storage bandwidth, and a 30% jump in CPU speeds. Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, framed the silicon redesign around high-density neural workflows.

On paper, that translates to an 18-core CPU and up to a 40-core GPU on the M5 Max, backed by memory configurations from 36GB to 128GB and SSDs from 512GB to 8TB. The M5 Ultra scales those figures to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, unified memory pools of 256GB or 512GB, and up to 16TB of internal storage.
The True Upgrade Math
If your daily workload revolves around standard commercial video editing, 2D design suites, or standard software compilation, this desktop is not built to fix your bottlenecks. While a 30% CPU lift and faster storage drives shave seconds off heavy exports and 3D renders, the bulk of this silicon redesign targets developers running massive large language models directly on local hardware. Standard creative suites simply cannot tap into the custom Neural Accelerators baked inside the GPU clusters.
Both tiers receive sensible physical upgrades, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 10Gb Ethernet, two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, a headphone jack, and a front-facing SDXC slot.
